Drug maker, Hoffman and La Roche has announced a program that will enable companies to stockpile its anti-viral drug Tamiflu for below the final market price. Tamiflu will be available at $6 per course, quantities must be ordered at minimum of 2,500 units, which totals $15,000. The drug works to prevent and treat sudden, unidentified flu outbreaks that no one has built immunity to. Many recall the Bird Flu outbreak of the ’90’s. State, Federal, and Foreign Governments have already stocked surpluses of Tamiflu. The Federal Government does support and encourage companies to partake in the program; it does not however subsidize it. Companies that would look to purchase quantities of Tamliflu, question the necessity of a drug for an outbreak that may never arrive. Hoffman and La Roche’s overall sales dropped 19% in 2007, due to government’s cut backs in spending. Thanks to a below final market price, the company has increased production 15 fold, as it prepares to produce an additional 31 million courses of Tamiflu. And what does that mean for the general public…fewer sick days. http://www.HealthcareCrossing.com
