The season for Back to School shopping has returned... But the retail market will probably now encounter a new experience… in consumer spending cutbacks as many potential retail shoppers struggle to survive in this weakening economy. Having to endure the summer months of inflation, national unemployment and gas prices all on the rise… back to school spending may be the last thing on a families TO DO list. But thoughts like that one are any mall managers’ fear. According to a Lazard Capital Markets Analyst, Todd Slater, he says that most kids will be returning to school in last year’s clothes. The AP reported that The International Council of Shopping Centers-UBS sales tally of 38 stores reported a 2.6 percent increase in July, in line with the 2.5 percent pace seen since the beginning of the industry's fiscal year, which starts in February. In terms of retail consumer spending, Analysts will direct their attention to August-September sales.
