US Cancels Necessary ISS Programs

European space officials are fuming that short-sighted US policies threaten NASAâs ability to maintain a presence on the International Space Station. First the American government decided to end the space shuttle program in 2010, five years before replacement craft will be ready to ferry astronauts and supplies to the ISS. NASA requested an additional one billion dollars a year to speed up the development of the Orion spacecraft, but this was denied. Then the X-38 experimental craft, a joint US-European project to create a lifeboat for the ISS, was cancelled on the American side. The ISS crew has been dependent on Russiaâs Soyuz space capsules, despite the US trade embargo against Russia. Now that Russia has invaded Georgia, it may be impossible for the US and Europe to cooperate with Russia on ISS missions. Construction on the International Space Station began in 1998. The ISS is a joint project among the space agencies of the United States, Russia, Japan, Canada and eleven European countries. It has been permanently manned since November 2000.
