Stepping In

2008 Hopeful Monster music video by JBall. I cut together some footage from a DV tape I found: me singing & playing guitar to Stepping In, Hopeful Monster's epic orch-pop space jam; AND some footage from one of my favourite live shows. Most of the people in the video are not playing on the recording; in fact the band is actually Fat Horses, a country gospel band I used to have in Toronto, and not Hopeful Monster at all. The show was at the Gladstone Hotel in November, 2000—the last concert before the hotel was temporarily closed. The players are Julie Penner, Alex Lukashevsky, Nathan Whitlock, "Big Larry 58" Thomas, Paul Aucoin, Jay Baird, Alphons Fear, Katia Taylor and Sharron Mirsky. The video was shot by Katia's brother Nick. I used some psychedelic handycam experiments from a basement far, far away, as B-roll, as well as my original storyboard drawings for Hopeful Monster's Stars Are Photomagnets video. It's a barn-dance space odyssey!
