Watching the flames, the never ending fire, besides the great river, one cannot help but get the chills. Families, without tears, without remorse, burn their loved ones. No woman are allowed near the burning, because in the past they have flung themselves onto the burning bodies of their husbands. The men that surround never shed a tear, rather they chant merrily as their loved one ascends straight to heaven. It is believed that to die in Varanasi is to die with guaranteed enlightenment.
