Step 1: Convert your Carton Begin by taking an empty milk carton and stapling the top shut. Next, cut a hole in the side about 2" from the top. The hole itself can be any size you want, we cut our to be 3" x 2 1/2". Once this is done, take your hole puncher and punch a hole at the top of the carton, and one about 1/2" below the hole in the center of the carton. This second hole is where you'll put the dowel for the bird's to rest on. Insert a pencil through the hole and punch through the back of the carton, so that the dowel can go all the way through the carton. Step2: Begin Painting You want to begin your painting by putting two coats of light brown all over the carton. Once those are dry mix a darker shade of brown and let your child decorate the carton with lines and squiggles to look like a real tree. You also want to apply at least two coats of either shade of brown to the dowel. Step 3: Your Roof Realized While waiting for your carton to dry you'll want to take your popsicle sticks or tongue depressors, and cut them in half. Next you'll want to apply a coat of green to both sides. Once that is dry your child can then paint the sticks to look like leaves. Step 4: Put it all Together Once all you'll separate pieces are dry you'll want to glue the popiscle sticks on the roof and slide the dowel into place. Next you want to take a piece of string and thread it through the hole at the top, this is how you'll hang your bridhouse. Now all you have to do is add birdseed and you'll have your very own homemade, bird sanctuary.
