In old Hawaii the sound of the pa`u drum echoed through the valley as the chanter announced the birth of a new child. At the one year festive gathering, a`ha aina halawa, the celebration called a luau, the `ohana get together, share food and celebrate the childs birth. Poi, fish or taro leaf were the main dishes. Friends and relatives brought gifts for the child.
