Arming themselves with knives. Why they didn't bring guns. Traveling and seeing the world, especially port towns and their brothels. Trying to write a realistic story. How I hold myself up to George R.R. Martin (A Song of Fire and Ice) and Glen Cook's (The Black Company) work. Magicians who travel and entertain. "Paper... airplanes? What are airplanes?" Learning to not stand out, especially by mentioning where they are from.
