In all fairness, the DSM-IV lists that same range of disorders from intoxication to dependence, for all substances. The DSM-IV also lists NOS, or Not Otherwise Specified for practically every other category of disorder in the entire catalogue. Also, the DSM-IV is at least honest in its section on cannabis withdrawal (yet another diagnosis) and states that "there is no statistical significance" in repported symptoms of withdrawal from cannabis, even in long time heavy users. The symptoms are primarily psychological, which is more subjective and more arbitrary, and could be on the level of having to do without coffee or chocloate for a month at a time.
And read up on Dr. Lester Grinspoon, who is department chair of psychiatry at harvard. He is avidly in favor of having marijuana legalized, no ifs ands or buts.
