You should keep the thumb of your shooting hand ABOVE the manual safety of the 1911 pistols. The reason is simple - if your attacker gets close enough to you to grab your gun, and your thumb is below the safety, grabbing the back of your gun will lock the safety in place and make it impossible for you to fire. If you keep your thumb above the safety, then grabbing the back of the gun will at least still allow you to fire. Remember that in most self-defense cases the attacker is pretty close to you already.
