WORLD No.1 Roger Federer has survived a major scare in his third round match against unseeded Serb Janko Tipsarevic at the Australian Open in Melbourne. Federer, who is chasing a third straight Australian Open title, fought back to win 6-7 (5-7) 7-6 (7-1) 5-7 6-1 10-8 in a match that lasted four hours and 27 minutes. His struggle to beat Tipsarevic was a huge surprise as he had cruised through the first two rounds, losing only three games in each of them. He has not been knocked out in the third round of a grand slam tournament since the 2004 French Open. He has made the final of the past eight grand slam tournaments, winning six of them. His opponent in the fourth round will be either Czech 13th seed Tomas Berdych or Argentina's 21st seed Juan Monaco.
