Awesome! I have to go tear apart my blender, now. I feel a song coming on...
The death throes of an exposed computer undergoing water torture. American Sign Language-assisted poetry against a background of re-wired children's musical instruments. A steam-powered synthesizer. All these and more were featured at last year's Bent Festival when it visited Los Angeles. Part electronic DIY concert and part classroom, audiences enjoyed soundscapes created by viola...and a thoroughly-soldered Nintendo console. A circuit was hand-built on the lens of an overhead projector until it chirped to life. Even a carrot in a microphone-enabled meat grinder became a musical instrument. (Depending on how you define music.) Visitors also had a chance to create their own instruments in daytime classes for first-time Circuit Benders. The festival hits the road again this year, blessing Minneapolis, New York and Los Angeles with unique musical line-ups and workshops at each venue. Details at: www.BentFestival.org.
