KAUI, Hawaii (June 5, 2008) - A modified Standard Missile - 2 (SM-2) Block IV interceptor is launched from USS Lake Erie (CG 70) during today's Missile Defense Agency test against a short range ballistic missile (Scud-like) target. Moments after the launch, there was a successful intercept approximately 12 miles above the Pacific Ocean, on the Pacific Missile Range Facility, about 100 miles west of the island of Kauai, Hawaii. It was the second successful intercept, in two attempts, of a sea-based terminal capability and the fourteenth overall of the Aegis Ballistic Missile Defense Program.
